How to Find Donors for Your Short Film Outside Your Friends & Family
The 3 (of many) outreach strategies I used to raise $80K+ for short films from complete strangers!
The Reason Most Campaigns Stall at 35% 📉
You finally launch your campaign on Seed & Spark! You text your friends and family. You post on Instagram a few times... and then you watch the progress bar flatline.
Your inner circle matters for early momentum. But they're not going to get you to 100%. The campaigns that hit their goal find donors who don't know you yet.
Below are 3 specific tactics I use to help filmmakers find high-value donors outside their personal network. A derivative of these same strategies also helped me raise $3M+ million for multiple feature films! 🎬
Tactic 1: The IMDb Strategy 🔍
This is a good one. Find people who have already funded short films like yours, and ask them to fund yours too.
Executive Producers on indie shorts are almost always the biggest financial backers. They're usually regular people — doctors, lawyers, business owners — who wrote significant checks because they believed in a project. If they had a good experience? They're often open to doing it again!
How it works:
- Find 20-30 short films similar to yours in genre, tone, or themes. Check Vimeo Staff Picks, Short of the Week, and festival archives.
- Look up their Executive Producers on IMDb. On smaller shorts you'll see 1-3 EPs. On larger productions, 5-10. These are your targets.
- Use IMDb Pro to find their contact info. Sign up for the free 30-day trial! You can often find their email or LinkedIn profile directly.
- Send a personalized cold email referencing the specific film they EP'd and why your project connects to their taste. Include your campaign link and a Calendly.
Pay attention to EPs with credits on multiple shorts over the past few years. If someone has EP credits on five shorts since 2021, they're likely a serial supporter of indie film and your highest-priority lead! 🎯
Realistic conversion on cold outreach: about 1-5%. Sounds low, but the math works. Reach out to 100 past EPs, convert 3 — one at $100, one at $250, one at $1,500 — and you've raised nearly $2k from complete strangers.
Tactic 2: Activate Your Second-Degree Network 🤝
A second-degree connection is anyone one step removed from your immediate network. Your college roommate's coworker. Your producer's aunt. Your mom's book club friend who loves indie film.
You don't have these people in your phone, but someone you know does.
The Key Insight
Most filmmakers ask: "Do you know anyone who might support my campaign?" Way too vague. It puts all the mental work on them!
Instead, ask specific questions: "Do you know anyone who works in [industry related to your film]?" or "Does anyone in your family support the arts?" The more specific, the more likely they follow through.
After someone pledges, follow up with:
"Thank you so much! Quick question — is there anyone in your network who might be interested in this kind of project? Happy to send you something to forward!"
If your inner circle is 150 people and just 30% make one introduction each, that's 45 new contacts you never would have reached. Second-degree connections convert at 15-25%, and you'll occasionally get a surprise $500 pledge from someone's uncle who turns out to be a cinephile! 🍿
Tactic 3: Tap Into Communities You Already Belong To 🌐
What most filmmakers miss: your richest potential donors probably aren't in the film industry.
Film school alumni are often other struggling filmmakers. Industry professionals have donation fatigue. But a successful surgeon in Ohio? A real estate developer in North Carolina? To them, having their name on a short film premiering at a festival feels genuinely special.
Networks Worth Mining
College alumni groups (not film school — your general university alumni association!), paid communities, clubs and rec memberships, religious communities, hobbyist groups, your parents' professional networks, and friends at companies with donation matching programs*.
A fellow member of your running club might back your film because they think it's cool that someone they know is making a movie. That's the whole pitch!
*If someone pledges and you know they work at a big company, always ask about matching donation programs. Many companies match dollar for dollar. A $100 pledge becomes $200 at no extra cost! 🔥
