The Storyboard Template

I’ve storyboarded every shot of every film I’ve ever made.

For me, storyboarding isn’t optional — it’s how I translate a script into a movie. It’s my directing homework. Even if I end up throwing it away once I’m on set (because I’m always listening to the movie, looking for something better, trying to catch lightning in a bottle) I still show up with a bulletproof plan because it gives me the confidence to play, knowing I have a backup plan that lets me make the most of my time on set.

The problem? Pre-production would take forever (especially on my features) because I spent the last decade hand-drawing thousands of storyboard boxes, filling up five journals with copy-and-paste layouts just to keep up. My poor hand.

Last year, I finally sat down to create my own digital storyboard template and spent the following months working with it on my own professional work until it felt perfectly optimized for my brain and my script-to-screen workflow. I wanted to share it here in hopes that it'll prove itself incredibly useful to other filmmakers like me.

Inside this kit, you'll find templates in five cinematic aspect ratios:

• 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 1.85:1, 2.35:1

Each folder includes:

• Page 1 — for thumbnails, title ideas, and big-picture notes
• Page 2 — 5 Storyboard panels per page with labeled fields for Scene/Shot, Location, What Happens, VFX, Props, and more
• Checkboxes to track what’s been shot
• Files in PDF, PNG, .procreate, and .goodnotes formats

💻 Compatible with All Major Notes Apps

• Notability, GoodNotes, Procreate, Apple Freeform / Notes (iPad recommended)
• Or just print the PDFs and draw by hand (as I like to do)

Once I start filming, I rarely look back at the script. The boards are the film now. And if you’re using hand-drawn versions, you can always scan them into your Notes app afterward to keep them digital.
